The name, Iron Man, is... Thanos! More properly, Thanos the First - - Emperor shortly of near-defeated Titan - - Then of your own Earth!

Thanos, introducing himself to Iron Man

Thanos was an Eternal interstellar terrorist and conqueror of the 20th century. Born on the Saturnian moon Titan, he was the son of A'Lars and Sui-San. His father was the ruler of the planetoid, and he reigned alongside his sons. Following a failed revolt that came to be known as the Great Rift, Thanos was exiled for having introduced weapons to a pacifist society. His hunger for revenge led him to assemble an army of extraterrestrial criminals, with whom he orchestrated a siege of Titan. Mentor sought assistance from the cosmic entity Kronos, who constructed an assassin, Drax the Destroyer, to personally kill Thanos. Their battle led to the destruction of a planet and encounter with the human superhero Iron Man. Thanos subsequently became a perennial threat to the planet Earth and its defenders, the Avengers.

Notes[]

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Thanos was created by American comic book writer and artist Jim Starlin.[1] In live action, the character was portrayed by Josh Brolin.[2]

Popular Culture[]

  • Thanos' image was used in the 2020 United States presidential election as part of a campaign ad by the team for incumbent President Donald J, Trump.[3][4][5] Starlin reacted poorly, stating that after his "initial feeling of being violated, seeing that pompous fool using my creation to stroke his infantile ego, it finally struck me that the leader of my country and the free world actually enjoys comparing himself to a mass murderer."[6] Starlin later mocked Trump in a 2021 comic.[7]
