Samus Aran was a human bounty hunter from the Metroid Multiverse, one who was outfitted with Chozo technology. She was most commonly known for being hired by the Galactic Federation to wipe out the parasitic Metroids, as well as combat the Space Pirates.

She had fought the leader of the organization, Mother Brain, as well as other lieutenants, such as Kraid, multiple times, but her greatest nemesis was Ridley.

She was also famously known for being responsible for the destruction of Zebes.

Behind the Scenes

Creation and conception

• Samus was created by Japanese game designers Makoto Kano and Hiroji Kiyotake. Making Samus a woman was only conceived of midway through the development of "Metroid". The developers of "Metroid: Zero Mission", a remake of the first game, sought to "express her femininity a little more without trying to turn her into a sex object."

Gender identity

• In 1994, a "Super Metroid" video game strategy guide was published by Nintendo. In it, designer Hirofumi Matsuoka declared Samus Aran to not be a cisgender woman, but a "newhalf", a uniquely Japanese cultural term referring to transgender women. While the word is considered a slur, it was used commonly at the time by Japanese media to refer to transgender women.
